Today is National Cancers Awareness Day. Given the fact cancers are the 2nd leading cause of death in India which is likely to double by 2015 and triple by 2030, the awareness about cancers is a must for everyone to checkmate its spread..
Though there are multiple reasons behind spread of this deadly disease in India, almost 70% cancer burden is related to life style factors, hence preventable. More than 1/3rd cancers (2 out of every 5) are tobacco related and other due to faulty diet habits and social habits.
The unhealthy lifestyle that increases risk of cancers is tobacco consumption. Besides increased consumption of animal fats & oils, refined foods, spicy and hot foods, hot boiling tea, sundried vegetables and smoked fish, sedentary life style, obesity, alcohol consumption, or un-necessary exposure to X-ray or toxic chemicals and some specific infections are other major cancer risk factors.
The early the cancer is detected the better is the cure rate and prognosis. Most of the cancers are silent for long time and give no initial warning. Once cancer produces evident symptoms and signs, it is already in advanced stage and usually difficult to treat. 2/3rds of cancers are detected in advanced stage. Treatment of any cancer in advanced stage is difficult, prolonged and expensive.
On National Cancer Awareness Day today, let each of us take a collective pledge to prevent cancers by adopting healthy life style like regular use of fresh green leafy vegetables and fruits, regular exercise, plenty of fluids, consumption of dried fruits in small quantities, maintaining optimal weight, avoidance of tobacco in any form, excess consumption of red meat, animal fats, hot and spicy foods, hot boiling salt tea, sun-dried vegetables, pickles, alcohol. In addition females should always prefer to Brest feed their babies..
