Badayun gang-rape incident which has shaken the whole nation, has also unfolded an another dimension to the gruesome incident that absence of toilets is a major contributing factor to incidents of gang-rapes, eve-teasing  in our country. In absence of toilets in their homes, womenfolk in our country are left with no option but to defecate in open and it makes them susceptible to eve-teasers. It is an irony that even after 67 years of country's independence, nearly half of India's 1.2 billion people have no toilet at home.
According to the 2011 Census, 53 per cent households in the country don't have toilet facilities while the figure is much higher at 69.3 per cent in rural areas.Only 46.9% of the 246.6 million households have lavatories while 49.8% defecate in the open. Over 78 per cent of rural households in states like Jharkhand, Bihar, Rajasthan, Odisha and Chhattisgarh don't have toilets.

That data makes a mockery of the fact that in a country  where millions have access to cutting-edge technology and consumers goods, there are a large number of poor lack access to even basic amenities. These are the areas where the new government needs to look into seriously and must ensure that every household in the country  should essentially have a latrine to prevent recurrences of incidents like Badayun.
