Collective efforts needed to curb drug abuse

26 June  is the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit
Trafficking  to help create a society free of illegal drugs and drug
abuse.  Raising an awareness against ill effects of drug abuse has
assumed significance more so because of the fact that the harmful use
of alcohol  results in 3.3 million deaths every year.
According to available statistics, on an average every person in the
world aged 15 years and above drinks 6.2 liters of pure alcohol per
year.  At least 15.3 millions people in the world have drug use
disorders. As far as India is concerned, the country has over 3
million drug addicts. HIV is a significant issue for drug addicts in
India with over 2.4 million people getting infected. This places India
third highest country in the world in terms of rate of infection.
Though government bodies as well as non-governmental organizations are
doing their bit to eradicate  the menace of drug abuse, a collective
and concerted efforts need to be applied from all of us to curb the
deadly drug menace in our country and stop our youngsters falling prey
to drug abuse.
