Protect your heart; say `goodbye’ to sedentary lifestyle



Over the past few decades, the incidence of heart disease has increased tremendously and it seems to have surpassed all the boundaries of uncontrollable risk factors that earlier were associated with increased risk of heart disease.

Today, controllable risk factors like diet, physical inactivity and stress largely determine the risk of heart disease which kills 17 million people every year  around the   world. Earlier it was believed that the heart diseases occur in older people. But now- a-days heart diseases are quiet common in young people because of sedentary life style and poor eating habits.

In order to increase awareness among people towards heart related diseases  throughout the  world,  every year World Heart Day is celebrated on September 29. On this  day, let us we all pledge to lead a healthy life-style, engaged ourselves in physical activities, lead a stress-free life  and consume less than 5 gm of salt a   day to keep ourselves free from heart related ailments.

विश्व पर्यटन दिवस

आज विश्व पर्यटन दिवस  है।  विश्व के अन्य देशों के तरह आज हमारे देश में भी  पर्यटन को बढ़ावा देने के लिए अनेक कार्यक्रम आयोजित किये जा रहे  है।  जहाँ तक  भारत  प्रश्न है,  देश में पर्यटन सबसे बड़ा सेवा उद्दोग के रूप में उभर चूका है, जिसका  देश के राष्ट्रीय सकल घरेलू उत्पाद (GDP) में 6.6% और भारत के कुल रोज़गार में 8.78% का योगदान है। भारत में वार्षिक तौर पर 5 मिलियन विदेशी पर्यटकों का आगमन  होता है। एसोचेम  के अनुसार   सन 2015 तक भारत में आने वाले विदेशी पर्यटकों  संख्या वर्तमान में 70 लाख से 80 लाख प्रति वर्ष तक पहुँचने की  सम्भावना है, पर यह आंकड़ा विश्व  पर्यटन के परिदृश्य पर  उत्साहजनक नहीं है । हमारे देश में बहुत सारे  ऐसे क्षेत्र हैं जो पर्यटन की  दृष्टि से  महत्वपूर्ण है पर इन क्षेत्रों में आधारभूत संरचनाओं के  अभाव के कारण पर्यटन का समुचित विकास नहीं हो पाया है। इसके साथ ही आतंकवाद , हिंसा एवं सांप्रदायिक वैमनस्यता की  छिटपुट समस्याएं भी विदेशी पर्यटकों को हमारे देश में आने से सशंकित कर रही हैं।  जिस तरह हमारा देश प्राकृतिक सुन्दरताओं, भौगोलिक विविधताओं से भरा परा  है और  यदि हम क्षेत्रों का पर्यटन की  दृष्टि से समुचित विकास करें तो वह दिन दूर नहीं जब  भारत विश्व पर्यटन के शिखर पर पहुंचकर विश्व में पर्यटन से  सबसे अधिक विदेशी मुद्रा  अर्जित करने  वाला देश  बन  सकता  है, बशर्ते देश में आने वाले विदेशी मेहमानों के लिए  हम पूर्ण सुरक्षित एवं हिंसा एवं भय रहित वातावरण दे सकें । विश्व पर्यटन दिवस पर आप सबको ढेर सारी शुभकामनाएँ।

Think Before You Judge

A doctor entered the hospital in hurry after being called in for an urgent surgery. He answered the call asap, changed his clothes and went directly to the surgery block.  He found the boy’s father pacing in the hall waiting for the doctor.

On seeing him, the father yelled, “Why did you take all this time to come? Don’t you know that my son’s life is in danger? Don’t you have any sense of responsibility?”

The doctor smiled and said, “I am sorry, I wasn’t in the hospital and I came as fast as I could after receiving the call and now, I wish you’d calm down so that I can do my work”.

“Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now, would you calm down? If your own son dies while waiting for doctor than what will you do??” said the father angrily.  The doctor smiled again and replied, “We will do our best by God’s grace and you should also pray for your son’s healthy life”.

“Giving advises when we’re not concerned is so easy” Murmured the father.

The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happy, “Thank goodness! your son is saved!” And without waiting for the father’s reply he carried on his way running by saying, “If you have any questions, ask the nurse”.

“Why is he so arrogant? He couldn’t wait some minutes so that I ask about my son’s state” Commented the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left.  The nurse answered, tears coming down her face, “His son died yesterday in a road accident, he was at the burial when we called him for your son’s surgery.  And now that he saved your son’s life, he left running to finish his son’s burial.”

Moral of the story: Never judge anyone because you never know how their life is and what they’re going through.

समाजवाद के अग्रदूत महाराजा अग्रसेन

अग्रवालों के कुलपिता महाराजा अग्रसेन की आज जयंती है। इस अवसर पर सारे  विभिन्न कार्यक्रम आयोजित किये जा रहे हैं।  जैसा की वर्णित है महाराजा अग्रसेन का जन्म प्रतापनगर (राजस्थान) में सूर्यवंशी क्षत्रिय राजा वल्लभ के घर हुआ | वे राजा धनपाल की छठी पीढ़ी में हुए तथा अपने पिता की ज्येष्ठ संतान थे| उनका समय 5000 वर्ष से भी ज्यादा पहले का (महाभारतकालीन) माना जाता है| महाराजा अग्रसेन ने अग्रोहा {हिसार (हरियाणा) से दस किलोमीटर दूर} को अपनी राजधानी बनाया| वर्तमान समय में वहाँ अग्रवालों की कुलदेवी माँ लक्ष्मी का बड़ा सुन्दर मंदिर बनाया गया है जिसे अग्रवालों का शक्तिपीठ कहा जाता है|

 महाराजा अग्रसेन को समाजवाद का अग्रदूत कहा जाता है| अपने क्षेत्र में सच्चे समाजवाद की स्थापना हेतु उन्होंने नियम बनाया कि उनके नगर में बाहर से आकर बसने वाले व्यक्ति की सहायता हेतु नगर का प्रत्येक निवासी उसे एक रुपया व एक ईंट देगा, जिससे आसानी से उसके लिए निवास स्थान का प्रबंध हो जाए| महाराजा अग्रसेन का विवाह राजा नागराज की पुत्री माधवी से हुआ तथा उनके 18 पुत्र हुए, जिनके नाम पर वर्तमान में अग्रवालों के 18 गोत्र हैं| 

भारत में इस समय ‘अखिल भारतीय अग्रवाल सम्मलेन’, ‘अखिल भारतीय वैश्य महासम्मेलन’ जैसी संस्थाएं व्यापक स्तर पर कार्य कर रही हैं|

 आज जब हमारे देश में विभिन्न सम्प्रदायों के लोगों के बीच आपसी विश्वास, सदभाव, भाईचारा का ह्रास हो रहा है, आवश्यकता है की हम सब महाराजा अग्रसेन के कृतित्वों, सद्गुणों का अनुसरण कर देश में आपसी सौहार्द का वातावरण निर्मित करें।

शारदीय नवरात्रि की महिमा, व्रत का महत्व, पूजन

भक्तजनों आज से माँ दुर्गा की उपासना का पर्व शारदीय नवरात्री शुरू हो रहा है।  जैसा की आप सभी जानते हैं नवरात्रि का अर्थ होता है, नौ रातें। हिन्दू धर्मानुसार यह पर्व वर्ष में दो बार आता है। एक शरद माह की नवरात्रि और दूसरी बसंत माह की| इस पर्व के दौरान तीन प्रमुख हिंदू देवियों- पार्वती, लक्ष्मी और सरस्वती के नौ स्वरुपों श्री शैलपुत्री, श्री ब्रह्मचारिणी, श्री चंद्रघंटा, श्री कुष्मांडा, श्री स्कंदमाता, श्री कात्यायनी, श्री कालरात्रि, श्री महागौरी, श्री सिद्धिदात्री का पूजन विधि विधान से किया जाता है | जिन्हे नवदुर्गा कहते हैं।

प्रथमं शैलपुत्री च द्वितीयं ब्रह्माचारिणी।

तृतीय चंद्रघण्टेति कुष्माण्डेति चतुर्थकम्।

पंचमं स्कन्दमातेति षष्ठं कात्यायनीति च।

सप्तमं कालरात्रि महागौरीति चाऽष्टम्।

नवमं सिद्धिदात्री च नवदुर्गा प्रकीर्तिताः।

नव दुर्गा-

प्रथम दुर्गा : श्री शैलपुत्री

श्री दुर्गा का प्रथम रूप श्री शैलपुत्री हैं। पर्वतराज हिमालय की पुत्री होने के कारण ये शैलपुत्री कहलाती हैं। नवरात्र के प्रथम दिन इनकी पूजा और आराधना की जाती है।

द्वितीय दुर्गा : श्री ब्रह्मचारिणी

श्री दुर्गा का द्वितीय रूप श्री ब्रह्मचारिणी हैं। यहां ब्रह्मचारिणी का तात्पर्य तपश्चारिणी है। इन्होंने भगवान शंकर को पति रूप से प्राप्त करने के लिए घोर तपस्या की थी। अतः ये तपश्चारिणी और ब्रह्मचारिणी के नाम से विख्यात हैं। नवरात्रि के द्वितीय दिन इनकी पूजा और अर्चना की जाती है।

तृतीय दुर्गा : श्री चंद्रघंटा

श्री दुर्गा का तृतीय रूप श्री चंद्रघंटा है। इनके मस्तक पर घंटे के आकार का अर्धचंद्र है, इसी कारण इन्हें चंद्रघंटा देवी कहा जाता है। नवरात्रि के तृतीय दिन इनका पूजन और अर्चना किया जाता है। इनके पूजन से साधक को मणिपुर चक्र के जाग्रत होने वाली सिद्धियां स्वतः प्राप्त हो जाती हैं तथा सांसारिक कष्टों से मुक्ति मिलती है।

चतुर्थ दुर्गा : श्री कूष्मांडा

श्री दुर्गा का चतुर्थ रूप श्री कूष्मांडा हैं। अपने उदर से अंड अर्थात् ब्रह्मांड को उत्पन्न करने के कारण इन्हें कूष्मांडा देवी के नाम से पुकारा जाता है। नवरात्रि के चतुर्थ दिन इनकी पूजा और आराधना की जाती है। श्री कूष्मांडा की उपासना से भक्तों के समस्त रोग-शोक नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

पंचम दुर्गा : श्री स्कंदमाता

श्री दुर्गा का पंचम रूप श्री स्कंदमाता हैं। श्री स्कंद (कुमार कार्तिकेय) की माता होने के कारण इन्हें स्कंदमाता कहा जाता है। नवरात्रि के पंचम दिन इनकी पूजा और आराधना की जाती है। इनकी आराधना से विशुद्ध चक्र के जाग्रत होने वाली सिद्धियां स्वतः प्राप्त हो जाती हैं।

षष्ठम दुर्गा : श्री कात्यायनी

श्री दुर्गा का षष्ठम् रूप श्री कात्यायनी। महर्षि कात्यायन की तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर आदिशक्ति ने उनके यहां पुत्री के रूप में जन्म लिया था। इसलिए वे कात्यायनी कहलाती हैं। नवरात्रि के षष्ठम दिन इनकी पूजा और आराधना होती है।

सप्तम दुर्गा : श्री कालरात्रि

श्रीदुर्गा का सप्तम रूप श्री कालरात्रि हैं। ये काल का नाश करने वाली हैं, इसलिए कालरात्रि कहलाती हैं। नवरात्रि के सप्तम दिन इनकी पूजा और अर्चना की जाती है। इस दिन साधक को अपना चित्त भानु चक्र (मध्य ललाट) में स्थिर कर साधना करनी चाहिए।

अष्टम दुर्गा : श्री महागौरी

श्री दुर्गा का अष्टम रूप श्री महागौरी हैं। इनका वर्ण पूर्णतः गौर है, इसलिए ये महागौरी कहलाती हैं। नवरात्रि के अष्टम दिन इनका पूजन किया जाता है। इनकी उपासना से असंभव कार्य भी संभव हो जाते हैं।

नवम् दुर्गा : श्री सिद्धिदात्री

श्री दुर्गा का नवम् रूप श्री सिद्धिदात्री हैं। ये सब प्रकार की सिद्धियों की दाता हैं, इसीलिए ये सिद्धिदात्री कहलाती हैं। नवरात्रि के नवम दिन इनकी पूजा और आराधना की जाती है।

इस दिन को रामनवमी भी कहा जाता है और शारदीय नवरात्रि के अगले दिन अर्थात दसवें दिन को रावण पर राम की विजय के रूप में मनाया जाता है। दशम् तिथि को बुराई पर अच्छाकई की विजय का प्रतीक माना जाने वाला त्योतहार विजया दशमी यानि दशहरा मनाया जाता है। इस दिन रावण, कुम्भकरण और मेघनाथ के पुतले जलाये जाते हैं।

नवरात्रि का महत्व एवं मनाने का कारण -

नवरात्रि काल में रात्रि का विशेष महत्‍व होता है|देवियों के शक्ति स्वरुप की उपासना का पर्व नवरात्र प्रतिपदा से नवमी तक, निश्चित नौ तिथि, नौ नक्षत्र, नौ शक्तियों की नवधा भक्ति के साथ सनातन काल से मनाया जा रहा है। सर्वप्रथम श्रीरामचंद्रजी ने इस शारदीय नवरात्रि पूजा का प्रारंभ समुद्र तट पर किया था और उसके बाद दसवें दिन लंका विजय के लिए प्रस्थान किया और विजय प्राप्त की । तब से असत्य, अधर्म पर सत्य, धर्म की जीत का पर्व दशहरा मनाया जाने लगा। नवरात्रि के नौ दिनों में आदिशक्ति माता दुर्गा के उन नौ रूपों का भी पूजन किया जाता है जिन्होंने सृष्टि के आरम्भ से लेकर अभी तक इस पृथ्वी लोक पर विभिन्न लीलाएँ की थीं। माता के इन नौ रूपों को नवदुर्गा के नाम से जाना जाता है।

नवरात्रि के समय रात्रि जागरण अवश्‍य करना चाहिये और यथा संभव रात्रिकाल में ही पूजा हवन आदि करना चाहिए। नवदुर्गा में कुमारिका यानि कुमारी पूजन का विशेष अर्थ एवं महत्‍व होता है। गॉंवों में इन्‍हें कन्‍या पूजन कहते हैं। जिसमें कन्‍या पूजन कर उन्‍हें भोज प्रसाद दान उपहार आदि से कुमारी कन्याओं की सेवा की जाती है। 

नवरात्रि व्रत विधि-

आश्विन मास के शुक्लपक्ष कि प्रतिपद्रा से लेकर नौं दिन तक विधि पूर्वक व्रत करें। प्रातः काल उठकर स्नान करके, मन्दिर में जाकर या घर पर ही नवरात्रों में दुर्गाजी का ध्यान करके कथा पढ़नी चहिए। यदि दिन भर का व्रत न कर सकें तो एक समय का भोजन करें । इस व्रत में उपवास या फलाहार आदि का कोई विशेष नियम नहीं है। कन्याओं के लिये यह व्रत विशेष फलदायक है।

India's successfull mars mission

आज हमारे देश के लिए एक  ऐतिहासिक दिन है।  हमारे इंडियन स्‍पेस रिसर्च आॅर्गनाइजेशन के वैज्ञानिकों अपने  पहले प्रयास में मंगलयान को मंगल ग्रह की कक्षा में सफलतापूर्वक स्थापित कर भारत  को वो गौरव दिलाया है, जिसे आजतक किसी और देश को हासिल नहीं हुआ। विश्व का सबसे विकसित देश  अमेरिका तक की पहली 6 कोशिशें नाकाम रही हैं। इस तरह यान को मंगल ग्रह की कक्षा में स्थापित करने वाला भारत विश्व का चौथा एवं एशिया का पहला देश बन गया है।  इस मंगलयान की मदद से इसरो के वैज्ञानिक मंगल के वातावरण का अध्‍ययन कर सकेंगे। भविष्‍य में मंगल ग्रह पर भेजे जाने वाले मान‍व मिशन के लिए यह बेहद जरूरी है।  उम्मीद है आने वाले वर्षों में हमारे देश के वैज्ञानिक भारत को स्पेस तकनिकी के चरमोत्कर्ष तक पहुँचाने में सफल होंगे।

विश्वास की पूंजी को कदापि खर्च ना करें

बात तब की है जब अमर शहीद राम प्रसाद बिस्मिल पकड़ लिए गए। उन्हें कोतवाली लाया गया। कोतवाली में निगरानी रखने वाला सिपाही सो रहा था। बिस्मिल के पास भागने का पूरा मौका था। उन्होंने देखा कि वहां केवल बुजुर्ग मुंशीजी जागे हुए हैं। बूढ़े मुंशी ने भांप लिया कि बिस्मिल भागने की सोच रहे हैं। वह तुरंत बिस्मिल के पैरों पर गिर गए और बोले, ‘ऐसा न करना। नहीं तो मैं बंदी बना लिया जाऊंगा और मेरे बच्चे भूखों मर जाएंगे।’

बिस्मिल को उन पर दया आ गई और उन्होंने भागने का विचार तत्काल त्याग दिया। संयोगवश दो दिनों के बाद ही ऐसा मौका उन्हें फिर मिला। उन्हें जब शौचालय ले जाया गया तो उनके साथ दो सिपाही थे। एक ने दूसरे से कहा कि इनके हाथों में बंधी रस्सियां हटा दो। मुझे विश्वास है कि ये भागेंगे नहीं। इसके बाद जब बिस्मिल शौचालय गए तो पाया कि शौचालय की दीवार ज्यादा ऊंची नहीं है। बस हाथ बढ़ाते ही वह दीवार के ऊपर हो जाते और क्षण भर में बाहर निकल जाते।

उन्होंने देखा कि बाहर सिपाही कुश्ती देखने में मगन हैं। वह भागने ही वाले थे कि उन्हें विचार आया कि जिस सिपाही ने विश्वास कर इतनी स्वतंत्रता दी उससे विश्वासघात कैसे करूं। उन्होंने भागने का विचार तुरंत त्याग दिया। उन्होंने अपनी आत्मकथा में जेलर पंडित चंपालाल की भी काफी बड़ाई की है। उन्हें भागने के कई मौके हासिल हुए लेकिन उन्होंने सोचा कि इससे पंडित चंपालाल के ऊपर आफत आ जाएगी। बिस्मिल के लिए विश्वास की रक्षा सबसे बड़ी चीज थी।

इस छोटी सी कथा का सार यह है की जीवन में किसी का विश्वास अर्जन करना जीवन की सबसे बड़ी पूंजी है।  यह एक ऐसा धन है जिसे सिर्फ कमाया जा सकता है।  इस पूंजी को कदापि खर्च ना करें।

Indian institutions need to raise academic bar

It is quiet unfortunate to learn that none of our top universities/academic institutions has found mention in top 200 educational institutions in the world.  According to QS international survey, the only Indian institution – IIT Bombay has been placed on 222^nd position. IIT-Bombay has upstaged  IIT-Delhi which this year has slipped to 235^th rank in the international QS survey.

Though in  the past few  decades there has been a phenomenal rise in number of academic institutions in India, quality of education in majority of government as well  as private-body controlled  institutions is  far from satisfactory. Most of the academic institutions that have mushroomed in the country  are more or less  functioning like factories to churn out mediocre graduates, technocrats and management professionals.

There are various factors which have contributed to decline in  academic standard of our educational institutions. With the increasing globalization of higher education, Indian universities need to compete to attract the best students, as well as best qualified faculty from across the world. 

All great universities in the world  have full academic, financial and administrative autonomy to chart their own future. However, Indian universities lack the autonomy needed to be world class. They are controlled so heavily by regulators/government that they cannot innovate, be current nor aspire to reach the top.

To make  our academic institutions compete with top universities of the world, we need to create a world-class academic infrastructure, appoint best academicians, increase investment in educational sector and educational    research activities and forge  educational and technical collaborations to top class world institutions.

World Ozone Day today

Need to preserve Ozone layer to protect life on earth

Today is   World Ozone Day which is primarily observed all-over the world to spread awareness of the depletion of ozone layer and search for solution to preserve it as ozone layer plays a vital role in shielding life form the harmful ultraviolet light on earth.

Its depletion can have major effects on human’s health and surroundings as well. It has been observed that when 1% of the ozone layer is depleted, 2% more  UV-B can reach the surface of the planet.  Increase in UV-B levels is one of the most harmful effects of ozone depletion as it can cause skin cancer.

Albeit Montreal Protocol has so far been successful in meeting some of its targets on phasing out ozone-depleting substances. As a result, the abundance of ozone-depleting substances in the atmosphere is declining and the ozone layer is expected to recover around the middle of this century. There are, however, some remaining challenges to the phase-out of ozone-depleting substances.

While the respective governments, authorities throughout the world including India have been working assiduously  to kill and phase-out ozone depleting    substances in the atmosphere, we as individual do need to do our bit to avoid destruction of ozone layer. Actions must be taken  to save our mother earth by avoiding using products which has chlorofluorocarbons and get involved in activities such as tree plantation and backyard gardening.

Engineers Day

Engineers of our country have played key role in making India what it is today. In  the past six decades since our Independence, India has made superlative technological advances in almost every fields, making our lives so simple than what it used to be few decades back. From manufacturing needles, to missiles, rockets as well as space satellite launcher, our technocrats and scientists have categorically shown  that they do not lag behind any one, In fact their indigenously developed technologies can be compared with the best in the world. India's superiority in developing world-class technologies in various walks of life could not have been possible without our engineers who are the harbinger of development for any country in the world.

On Engineers' Day today which is celebrated to mark the birth day of Dr  M Visvesvaraya, the father of Engineering in India, I salute all our esteemed engineers for their great ideas and innovations that bring up a better change in our lives.

निरर्थक चर्चा में खर्च न करें समय

भगवान बुद्ध, अनमोल समय के सदुपयोग के पक्षधर थे। निकम्मी बातों में समय गंवाने का सदा विरोध किया करते थे। कोई आदमी उनके पास आया और बोला, भगवन् आप बार-बार दुख और विमुक्ति पर ही बोलते हैं। कृप्या यह तो बताइए यह दुख होता किसको है? और दुखों से विमुक्ति होती किसको है?

प्रश्न करने वाले का प्रश्न निरर्थक था। पर बुद्ध कहां ऐसी निरर्थक चर्चा में उलझने वाले थे। वह प्रेमपूर्वक बोले भाई तुम्हें प्रश्न करना ही नहीं आता है। प्रश्न यह नहीं करना चाहिए था कि दुख किसे होता है । तुम्हें प्रश्न करना चाहिए था कि दुख क्यों होता है?और विमुक्ति कैसे होती है?

सार्थक बात यह है कि दुख से छुटकारा पाएं और इसके लिए यह जानना आवश्यक है कि दुख का कारण क्या है? और उसका निवारण क्या है? और उसका निवारण क्या है? इसे छोड़ सभी चर्चाएं व्यर्थ होतीं हैं। यह सब निरर्थक नहीं तो और क्या हैं।

तभी बुद्ध से कोई पूछता है कि भगवन् यह बताएं कि संसार को किसने बनाया है? तो फिर वह प्यार से समझते हैं कि किसी विष बुझे तीर से घायल व्यक्ति कभी नहीं पूछता कि उसे किसने बनाया है। बेहतर है कि उस तीर को निकाल लिया जाए तो पीड़ा से मुक्त होकर इलाज कराया जाए। तभी वह दुख मुक्त हो सकता है।

सार यह कि ----  मनुष्य  के पास जिंदगी में बहुत कम समय है अगर वह फिजूल की बातों में यू ही गंवा देगा तो कुछ हासिल नहीं कर सकता। इसलिए निरर्थक बातों से बचना चाहिए। इसी में समझदारी है।

हिंदी विश्व की दूसरी सबसे बड़ी भाषा है। चीनी भाषा के बाद यह विश्व में सबसे अधिक बोली जाने वाली भाषा है। भारत और अन्य देशों में 60 करोड़ से अधिक लोग हिन्दी बोलते,पढ़ते और लिखते हैं। इतना ही नहीं फ़िजी,मॉरीशस,गुयाना,सूरीनामम नेपाल जैसे दूसरे देशों की अधिकतर जनता हिन्दी बोलती है।  आज हिन्दी राजभाषा,सम्पर्क भाषा,जनभाषा के सोपानों को पार कर विश्वभाषा बनने की ओर अग्रसर है। आज हिंदी दिवस के अवसर पर हम सब अपने राष्ट्र भाषा को उसके उत्कर्ष तक पहुचने अपनी सहभागिता निभाने का संकल्प लें जिससे की हमारी  राजभाषा विश्वभाषा के रूप स्थापित हो सके। हिंदी दिवस पर आप सभी को शुभकामनाएँ।

Every obstacle presents an opportunity

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway.

The peasant learned what many of us never understand! Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

UNICEF report on offences against women in India

How fair sex in our country are being treated unfairly in terms of sexual offences against them, can be gauged from a recent UNICEF report. according to which, about 10% of Indian girls would have faced sexual violence when they are aged 10-14, and 30% in the 15-19 age group. In all, about 42% of Indian girls face sexual violence before they cross their teens. The study depicts a sorry state of girls/women in our country/society. The grim scenario can improve only when each of us in our families treat girls/daughters with respect and specially boys need to take a lesson as how should they treat women/ and girls in our families.

मन-वचन--कर्म से ऐसा कृत्य करो जिससे पछताना ना पड़े

एक 12-13 साल के लड़के को बहुत क्रोध आता था।

उसके पिता ने उसे ढेर सारी कीलें दीं और कहा कि जब भी उसे क्रोध आए

वो घर के सामने लगे पेड़ में वह कीलें ठोंक दे। पहले दिन लड़के ने पेड़ में

30 कीलें ठोंकी। अगले कुछ हफ्तों में उसे अपने क्रोध पर धीरे-धीरे नियंत्रण

करना आ गया। अब वह पेड़ में प्रतिदिन इक्का-दुक्का कीलें ही ठोंकता था।

उसे यह समझ में आ गया था कि पेड़ में कीलें ठोंकने के बजाय क्रोध पर

नियंत्रण करना आसान था। एक दिन ऐसा भी आया जब उसने पेड़ में एक

भी कील नहीं ठोंकी। जब उसने अपने पिता को यह बताया तो पिता ने उससे

कहा कि वह सारी कीलों को पेड़ से निकाल दे। लड़के ने बड़ी मेहनत करके

जैसे-तैसे पेड़ से सारी कीलें खींचकर निकाल दीं। 

जब उसने अपने पिता को काम

पूरा हो जाने के बारे में बताया तो पिता बेटे का हाथ थामकर उसे पेड़ के पास

लेकर गया। पिता ने पेड़ को देखते हुए बेटे से कहा – “तुमने बहुत अच्छा काम

किया, मेरे बेटे, लेकिन पेड़ के तने पर बने सैकडों कीलों के इन निशानों को देखो।

अब यह पेड़ इतना खूबसूरत नहीं रहा। 

हर बार जब तुम क्रोध किया करते थे तब

इसी तरह के निशान दूसरों के मन पर बन जाते थे। अगर तुम किसी के पेट में

छुरा घोंपकर बाद में हजारों बार माफी मांग भी लो तब भी घाव का निशान वहां

हमेशा बना रहेगा। अपने मन-वचन-कर्म से कभी भी ऐसा कृत्य न करो

जिसके लिए तुम्हें सदैव पछताना पड़े…!!

World Literacy Day:  Let each of us educate at least five people


Today is International Literacy Day which is being celebrated across the world, primarily to draw the attention of authorities concerned towards promoting literacy among the masses.

Ironically for India where despite series of steps taken by the subsequent governments both in the states as well as in the centre towards achieving total literacy in the country in the past six decades, India continues to be one of the countries with the highest adult illiteracy rate, according to the current Education for All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report. According to UNESCO report, India has by far the largest population of illiterate aduts at 287 million, amount to 37% of the  global total. The report also indicates huge disparities in education levels of the country’s rich and the poor.

Even as primary education in the country over the years has witnessed an enthusiastic growth,  the number of students having access to secondary   education is still far from satisfactory. According to World Literacy Foundation, at the current rates, there could be more children out of school in 2015 than are now and education for all could    take over 75 years to achieve.

In India there are various factors influencing the literacy/illiteracy rates. From immortality rate to gender inequality, all play a vital role in determining the country’s literacy rates.
Though governments  on its part have taken sincere steps towards achieving its goal of total literacy, contributions from every section of the society, private sectors, corporates are essentially required to achieve this gigantic goal but  before this, each of us should voluntarily take initiatives to educate at least five persons in our vicinity and if this is done with utmost sincerity, it would certainly improve India’s rankings on literacy at world level.

WEF report promises `achhe din' for India

If one is to go by  annual study report of the World  Economic Forum, India has made a drastic improvement in its global ranking in terms of public trust in politicians, diversion of public funds, `irregular payments and bribery' at government offices as well as favouritism shown by the government officials to influential corporates.

In terms of favouritism shown by the government officials to influential corporates, India has made a giant leap from 94th position last year to 49th position this year, while it terms of public trust in politicians, the WEF report has placed India on 50th position from 115th last year. Similarly on matters related to  'diversion of public funds', India's ranking has moved up to 60th place, from 98th last year. 

Appreciable improvement in India's global rankings on the above-mentioned parameters is an indication of  country's `achhe din' (good days)  as being claimed by the present ruling government, in the time to come.

However, on the flip side of it, according to report, there are many areas of concern for the country as well and the new government will really have to make a Himalayan efforts to improve India's global ranking on overall global competitiveness front  where India's rank has slipped 11 place to 71st position amid challenging economic conditions.

On Teachers Day

Undoubtedly teachers are the one who have thought all of us how to read, how to write and how speak. They have made us able to interact with the people. Selflessly they become our friend and teach us the lesson of life.  They are the role model of all of us who give their best to make us responsible citizens and good human beings. Many of us would not have been so much responsible, understanding, had teachers not been in our lives.

And frankly speaking that without teachers our lives would be like a book with no lessons.  A Teacher is not only that persons who gives you his/her  8 hours to teach you your syllabus but instead a teacher could be you mother, your father, your friends or anyone who teaches you, understands you well.

On Teachers Day today, let us not only bow our heads before our teachers and pay respect to them for making us what we are today but also spread their virtues, teachings, ideologies to our younger generations to make our country a great nation and restore its pristine glory.

NCRB report, increasing incidents of crimes against women

Increasing incidents of crimes against women in our country had only eroded reputation of our country where since time memorial women had always been held in high esteem. If  the latest repors of the National Crimes  Records Bureau are anything to go by,  92 women were raped on an average every day in India. According to report, the  total number of rape cases reported in India has gone up to 33,707 in 2013 from 24,923 in 2012. 
Among all the Indian states, Madhya Pradesh continues to be on the top as far as number of rapes in the country are concerned. As per the NCRB data, Madhya Pradesh at an average records 11 rapes every day, with a total of 4,335 such cases, which is the highest in 2013 among all other states. 

The NCRB data is a gruesome reminder to the fact that notwithstanding salutary changes in the socio-economic condition of women in our country with growing level of literacy among them, they continue to be at the receiving end in our society in our male-dominated society.

It is high time we need change our mindset towards women  and must not treat them as an object of deriving sexual  pleasure. No society or for that matter a nation can progress on moral, spiritual and social parameters unless and until we give respect to women they deserve.

Building Bridges

Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch.

Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence. One morning there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. "I'm looking for a few days work," he said.

"Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you?"

"Yes," said the older brother. "I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That's my neighbor, in fact, it's my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I'll go him one better. See that pile of lumber curing by the barn? I want you to build me a fence - an 8-foot fence - so I won't need to see his place anymore. Cool him down, anyhow."

The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post-hole digger and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you."

The older brother had to go to town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day.

The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing.

About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer's eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped.

There was no fence there at all. It was a bridge... a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work handrails and all - and the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched.

"You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I've said and done."

The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other's hand. They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder. "No, wait! Stay a few days. I've a lot of other projects for you," said the older brother. "I'd love to stay on," the carpenter said, "but, I have many more bridges to build."

मन को शुद्ध रखें, कुसंस्कारों का त्याग करें।

एक बार समर्थ स्वामी रामदासजी भिक्षा माँगते हुए एक घर के सामने खड़े हुए और उन्होंने आवाज लगायी - “जय जय रघुवीर समर्थ !” घर से महिला बाहर आयी। उसने उनकी झोलीमे भिक्षा डाली और कहा, “महात्माजी, कोई उपदेश दीजिए !”

स्वामीजी बोले, “आज नहीं, कल दूँगा।”

दूसरे दिन स्वामीजी ने पुन: उस घर के सामने आवाज दी – “जय जय रघुवीर समर्थ !”उस घर की स्त्रीने उस दिन खीर बनायीं थी, जिसमे बादाम-पिस्ते भी डाले थे।वह खीर का कटोरा लेकर बाहर आयी। स्वामीजीने अपना कमंडल आगे कर दिया। वह स्त्री जब खीर डालने लगी, तो उसने देखा कि कमंडल में गोबर और कूड़ा भरा पड़ा है। उसके हाथ ठिठक गए। वह बोली, “महाराज ! यह कमंडल तो गन्दा है।”

स्वामीजी बोले, “हाँ, गन्दा तो है, किन्तु खीर इसमें डाल दो।” स्त्री बोली, “नहीं महाराज, तब तो खीर ख़राब हो जायेगी। दीजिये यह कमंडल, में इसे शुद्ध कर लाती हूँ।”

स्वामीजी बोले, मतलब जब यह कमंडल साफ़ हो जायेगा, तभी खीर डालोगी न ?”

स्त्री ने कहा : “जी महाराज !”

स्वामीजी बोले, “मेरा भी यही उपदेश है। मन में जब तक चिन्ताओ का कूड़ा-कचरा और बुरे संस्करो का गोबर भरा है, तब तक उपदेशामृत का कोई लाभ न होगा। यदि उपदेशामृत पान करना है, तो प्रथम अपने मन को शुद्ध करना चाहिए, कुसंस्कारो का त्याग करना चाहिए, तभी सच्चे सुख और आनन्द की प्राप्ति होगी।"
