Blog on international day of girl child today

Let  empower  our girl child; liberate them from obnoxious social mores
Notwithstanding talk about gender equality and socio-economic upliftment of girls/ women, the condition of majority of girls in our society is miserable.  Their rights are commonly  withheld around the globe even in the most developed nations.
Every year, nearly 10 million girls succumb to child marriage and are given away as brides before the age of 18, with no say in the matter. They are rarely schooled, and are the first to be pulled out if there are chores to be done or work to undertake to feed an ever growing family. They are often assaulted, physically and sexually, while performing chores like fetching water or wood, or even caring for young siblings at home or relieving themselves alone. From the modern metropolises of the western world to the traditional alleyways, girls are exploited simply because they are young and female.
It is against this background, the International Day of the Girl child is celebrated every year on October 11 to make our girls free from any kind of social, mental, physical subjugation, help them grow through their socio-economic empowerment. On this important day, let each of us  take a collective pledge to give our due to girl child by empowering them in whatever way we can and  liberating  them from the obnoxious social mores.
