Let us build disaster resilient communities

India like other natural disaster prone regions of the world every years suffer from huge loss of lives and property on account of periodic  natural calamities. Even as our natural disaster management policies are well in place and have a separate Natural Disaster Rescue Force to deal with such calamities, we have lost thousands of lives during the course of series of natural disasters which have hit the country over the years whether be it Tsunami or for that matter last year’s natural disaster in Uttarakhand ,  floods in Jammu and Kashmir or for that matter the recent Hudhud cyclone which rocked the east coast of country prominently coastal regions of Andhra and Orissa.
Today (Oct 13) The International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) is being observed all-over the world  to encourage every citizen and government  to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations.  It is a day to celebrate how people and communities are reducing their risk to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of DRR.
As the world is ageing this year's IDDR Day highlights the need for a more inclusive approach for older people in disaster risk reduction and recognize the critical role they can play in resilience-building through their experience and knowledge.
Given frequent arrival of natural calamities in India which claim hundreds of lives every year , it is important  that our disaster management or disaster reduction mechanism must be  attached top priority so as to minimize or reduce  the impact of such disasters in terms of preventing loss of life and property.
