Let’s save our daughters, celebrate their births

Notwithstanding steps  being taken at various levels to bridge  gender inequality, our country still needs to do a lot arrest declining  female sex ratio and encourage birth of girl child. As per the latest report, the male female, male sex   ration in our country stands at 943 females per 1,000 males.
In states like Haryana which has the lowest sex  ratio in the country is more alarming as out of 1000 males there are only 877 females. The situation in Haryana has come to such a sorry pass that a large number of boys in that  state on account of lopsided sex ration either are being constrained to remain  bachelor or they have to depend upon girls of other states to get married.

On  the other hand there are states like Puducherry and Kerala where the number of women has outnumbered men. According to last  population census, Kerala houses a number of 1084 females to that of 1000 males. Similarly states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have shown a considerable  sign of improvement in terms of male, female sex ratio.

But much more needs to be done to bring female population of the country at par with male population and for that matter we need to look into reasons like violent treatment  meted out to the girl child as well as biased attitude towards women, leading to declining female sex  ration in the country. In this regard, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move to kickstart `Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign in the country is quiet commendable. This noble initiative will surely change our perceptive towards female children in the society and the days  will not be far away when each home  in the country will celebrate birth of girl child.
